Award-Winning Age Scenario from Spain
Conquer Ancient Iberia in this Award-Winning Scenario

"Lucha por la Conquista de la Peninsula Iberica" (Fight for the Conquest of the Iberian Peninsula) was the winning entry in a recent AOE scenario-building contest judged by Bruce Shelley of Ensemble Studios. Contestants from several countries were to create scenarios that could be used in both single-player and multiplayer games. Interestingly, the author of the winning entry, David Ramos Lopez of Zamora, Spain, had to borrow the Age CD from a friend, both to learn the game and create his scenario for the contest. We're pleased to say he can finally give the disc back -- for his trouble, he won an Age Gift Pack, which includes his very own copy of the game. Felicitaciones (congrats), David!

Seeing that Spain isn't used much as a setting for computer games, David decided to create an Age map of the Iberian Peninsula, complete with major rivers and mountain ranges, the Straits of Gibraltar, and the horn of Morocco. Originally, he wanted a historically accurate recreation of battles among Celts, native Iberians, and Carthaginians, but he found it almost impossible. Instead, he settled on the following situation: In the single-player game, you start in the Bronze Age with the Assyrian civ, established just north of the Pyrenees, and you're allied with the Minoans, who have a relatively small coastal settlement to the northwest. The Greeks are located somewhere to the south, as are the Egyptians and Babylonians. Your object is to forge south and westward, break maritime trade between the Egyptians and Babylonians, and arrive in North Africa. There are five slots in the multiplayer game, corresponding to the five civs just described. If you're assigned to a neutral civ in multiplayer, you might want to withhold your allegiances until you see which way the wind is blowing between the main combatants.

The notes for the scenario are in Spanish. Here's a summary (not a direct translation) of the hints for the single-player game:

  1. Make a good stockpile of food and wood so you can build a strong fleet of ships.
  2. Establish trade with the Minoans to the northwest. You've got a lot of gold in your camp, so you might want to trade with that.
  3. If stone is part of your strategy, send out a squad of men to search for quarries near the mountains.
  4. For the final confrontation in Africa, you can walk a land force over the Straits of Gibraltar after you've subdued the peninsula.
  5. Before sending your army out from its base, make sure it's good and strong. You should probably explore the map with a powerful fleet first.
We want to thank the author for creating this interesting scenario. Enjoy!

Download "Lucha por la Conquista de la Peninsula Iberica."

Place the file into the scenario folder within your Age of Empires folder. By default, this folder is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\scenario. When you load Age of Empires, you should see the scenario "Lucha por la conquista de la peninsula Iberica" in the Scenarios list. Enjoy!
