Age of Empires III is a real-time strategy game where you build an economy on Food, Wood, Coin, and experience points, advance through the Discovery, Colonial, Fortress, Industrial, and Imperial Ages, and back your armies with shipments from a persistent Home City deck.
Getting Started
Keep your Town Center building Settlers non-stop from the very first second, sending them to gather Food from hunts and berries early and Coin from mines or plantations later; a stalled Town Center is the most common beginner mistake.
Build a Trading Post on any native settlement or Trade Route you find, since it earns extra experience or resources and unlocks native warriors, and remember that killing enemy units and constructing buildings both generate the experience that ships your Home City cards.
Winning Strategies
Counter with the right unit type: Skirmishers and Crossbowmen shred Musketeers and other infantry from range, Hussars and other cavalry run down artillery and skirmishers, and Musketeers and Pikemen hold the line against cavalry, so scout the enemy and mix your army instead of massing one unit.
Time an aggressive push around the Colonial Age or a Fortress-Age rush by shipping military cards from your Home City, such as extra Settlers, unit-attack upgrades, or a batch of soldiers, right as you hit the new Age to arrive with a spike the enemy cannot match.
