Score another victory for Combat Flight Simulator II.
Recently AVSIM - a leading flight simulation Web site and a noted clearinghouse for simulation-related software and internet resources - awarded Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 its prestigious five-star Award of Excellence. This marks the second time in the last year that a Microsoft flight simulator program has received the organization's Gold Medal for Excellence in Flightsim Design; Fighter Ace 2 took the award in December 1999.
“When first playing this sim, the question has to be asked, ?What doesn't this sim have?'” wrote AVSIM staff reviewer Robert Whitwell. “Starting at the easiest levels and working through to the toughest aerial dogfights, the entertainment and excitement value in this sim is non-stop. Add to that the realism, the smoke, the noise, the battle damage and Combat Flight Simulator 2 stands on a pedestal that equals and sometimes surpasses those in which these warbirds of old are amounted on around the world.”
Whitwell added that CFS2 offers something for everyone, from the “rookie aviator” to the “combat veteran.”
“No missing-man formation as a salute for this simulator, it's a full squadron fly-by.”
AVSIM Managing Editor Bill Dailey rated CFS2's graphics as the “very best going today,” adding the detail, scenery and overall environment of the simulator were first rate.
“Look at the damage effects," Dailey continued. "The flak bursts are the best of any combat sim currently on the market as far as what real flak looks like. Having it burst in front of me rolling in to a ship target brought back the same uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had watching real flak over Laos in the 1960s.”
Tucker Hatfield, Microsoft Program Manager for Combat Flight Simulator 2, said appreciatively, "It's always exciting to get an award, but it's particularly exciting to receive an award from a Web site that is so committed to simulations." Hatfield noted that simulation enthusiasts "are appropriately hard to please. Recognition from them is very special.”
