There are innumerable strategies that you can pursue in a game as complex as Close Combat III
. However there are a few basic tenets that you can observe to make your transition to multiplayer combat less traumatic.
Initial Unit Choices
- Carefully choose your additional units! Look particularly closely at the anti-tank capabilities of your default force. Even the best battle-hardened troops are likely to break and run or surrender when looking down a tank's massive barrel. Even a marginal increase in your overall anti-tank capability can mean the difference between victory and ignominious defeat if your opponent has more armor.
- Make the most of terrain! When you are first dropped into the game, carefully scan your surroundings. Note the location of any hills, trench systems, buildings, and bridges. These can make highly defensible positions. Note possible natural pathways into your territory and into and out of the enemy's.
- Place your heavy firepower first. The most powerful weapons at your disposal are tanks and armored vehicles, field guns, anti-tank guns, mortars, and anti-tank rifles. Carefully place the fixed guns and mortars in easily defensible positions that have the widest fields of fire.
When your opponent rolls out the armor and you've only got light anti-tank weapons, you need to position yourself for side shots. Look for buildings and alleys or canyons that can conceal your anti-tank team from oncoming tanks. Provide the tanks with disposable targets that will lure them past your anti-tank position.
These weapons are deadly to unarmored enemy troops and provide the back-up punch for your rifle squad and machine-gun teams. They should be situated where they are in range of most of your troop positions and your likely attack routes. However, they are vulnerable to close-range enemy attacks, so they need to be in protected positions and supported by machine gun and rifle teams.
- Place your machine-gun and rifle teams to be mutually supporting wherever possible. Try to evaluate each position for possible routes of enemy attack and place your teams so that each of these spots will be under flanking crossfire. Rifle teams should be supported by flanking machine guns wherever possible.
- Move your armor cautiously and only after having the terrain scouted by troops. While it is tempting to think of armor as being invulnerable, the sad truth is that even a mighty T-34 or Tiger tank can be taken down all too easily. It is well worth even the loss of an entire rifle squad if it highlights the enemy to your tanks. They can then be attacked at a distance by the tank's large gun or machine guns.
- BE PATIENT! Infantry combat rewards the patient player with victory. Fight the temptation to send your troops into an area quickly. It takes only moments for the balance of a power to shift irrevocably to the opponent. Commit only the smallest part of your force until you know what you are likely to encounter. Try to force your opponent to tip their hand and ambush small units by sending them to likely concentrations of troops and firepower.
