Magic Find and Farming

« Back to Tips & Strategies

Magic Find, or MF, is the affix that reads "+X% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items." Pile it across your gear and every corpse in Sanctuary pays out a little richer. Here is how to build for it and where to spend your hours.

Where the MF Comes From

  • Chance Guards, the unique gloves, carry 25 to 40% MF plus extra gold.
  • Nagelring, a unique ring worth 15 to 30% MF. You may wear two at once.
  • War Traveler boots and Gheed's Fortune, the grand charm, both pour on more.
  • A perfect Topaz socketed in a helm or body armor grants 24% MF, the budget hunter's friend.
  • An Ist rune socketed into a weapon or armor adds 25 to 30% MF.

The Law of Diminishing Returns

MF does not scale forever. Only plain magic (blue) items enjoy the full number. For rares, set pieces, and uniques the game quietly trims your total, so once you pass roughly 250 to 300% you gain very little on the very items you crave. Never trade away all your killing power for it. A dead treasure hunter finds nothing.

Where to Farm

  1. Mephisto, in the Durance of Hate below Kurast (Act III). The perennial favorite: quick to reach, tamed by the moat trick, and blessed with a generous drop table.
  2. Pindleskin, just past Anya's red portal in Harrogath (Act V). Dead in seconds, superunique loot.
  3. The Countess, at the bottom of the Forgotten Tower in Act I, for the runes your runewords demand.
  4. Andariel, a soft early target each difficulty, plus Diablo, Baal, and the Secret Cow Level (cube Wirt's Leg with a Tome of Town Portal in the Rogue Encampment).
  5. The level 85 zones such as The Pit in Act I and the Ancient Tunnels in Act II, where anything in the game can fall, along with the Travincal Council in Act III for a fast, item-heavy pack.

Rules of the Hunt

  • Run Nightmare and Hell. The finest uniques and set pieces never drop on Normal.
  • More players in the game means more items on the ground, so play a full game rather than run alone.
  • Higher monsters in higher areas roll better item levels. Hunt where the danger lives.
