Learning air combat can be a daunting task, but there are a few things that can make it easier and enhance your ability to survive. Keep in mind that on the Zone, most of your opponents will be human ones, which means that you will have to counter all of the diabolical twists that can be cooked up by the human mind. Print out the following pointers and keep them next to your computer.
- Lose sight, lose the fight!
This adage from the Navy's TopGun school is true in any air combat situation. EAW
makes it easier for you by having both padlock and an extensive view system. Get familiar with both and be able to call them up without any additional delay so that you can track a bogie in any direction and know where it is in relationship to your aircraft.
- Speed = Life
The coin of air combat is energy, either in the form of speed (kinetic) or altitude (potential). Speed gives your aircraft its ability to maneuver and, if need be, escape. There is no aircraft more vulnerable than one that is low and slow.
- Put some money in the bank.
The other kind of energy is potential energy, which in air combat means only one thing: altitude. Having lots of air under you is a way of storing energy that can be converted to speed at will. Speed means maneuvering ability. Nearly anytime you are not actively engaged in combat, you should be climbing. Excess altitude and speed can be shed easily, but regaining speed when you need it is much more difficult. Altitude allows you to dictate the terms of the engagement.
- Know your aircraft!
Air combat is simply a matter of applying the advantages of your aircraft to the weaknesses of your opponent. To do this successfully, you have to know how the various aircraft perform. For additional help, look here at Microprose.
With this basic information, you can start your career as an online fighter pilot. Good luck!
