FS: What's the scariest flying situation you've ever found yourselves in?
JOHN: Well, probably the scariest moment was getting caught on top of an overcast with electrical failure and realizing that we had to go down through that overcast, and that ultimately we had to make the decision to make a precautionary landing in which we knew the aircraft was going to be damaged.
FS: I believe you share this story in your talk, How to Avoid Unwanted Adventure, right?
MARTHA: That's right.
JOHN: The whole situation played itself out over about an hour, and it was probably the scariest hour because it unfolded so slowly and we ultimately had to make a decision where we knew we were going to damage the aircraft. What you really have to say to yourself is - "Aircraft you've let me down and I'm not going to try to protect you. I'm just going to try to take care of the people in the airplane." And that was the decision we made and it was the right decision. Neither one of us got hurt seriously, but we did do a little damage to the aircraft. It was a very difficult decision to make and there was a lot of tension involved in that.
