Quick Start Guide

This quick start guide provides MSN Game Zone members step-by-step guidance on how to get started playing GemStone III. Before playing the game for the first time, we suggest that you review and print out a copy of this guide.

Select a Character Manager
The first step in playing GemStone III is creating a character within the character manager. The character manager allows you to totally customize your character, from your skills and profession to your name and appearance. Choose "1" for the simple "Vanilla" version or "2" for the prettier "Cursor Control" version.

Choose a Character Generation Method
There are two ways to create a character -- the Quick Gen and Full methods.

We suggest that new users pick the Quick Gen method. This method is simple and fast and automatically chooses your character's stats and skills. You will still have the option to determine your profession, race, physical appearance, and name. Once you become an experienced GemStone III player, you may re-roll and create a new character using the Full method.

Experienced GemStone III players and online role-players may opt to choose the Full method, which allows you to customize your character's stats and skills. To learn more, check out the Players Manual for tips on Character Stats and Advancing Your Skills.

Pick a Profession
The next step is to pick a profession. You have eight options: Warrior, Rogue, Wizard, Empath, Sorcerer, Ranger, and Bard. To learn more about each profession, read the Choosing a Profession guide in the Players Manual in the Help.

Determine a Race
Next, you will be asked to choose a race. Your choices are Human, Giantman, Half-Elf, Sylvankind, Dark Elf, Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling. To learn more about each race, read the Choosing a Race guide.

Choose a Gender
Next, you will be asked whether your character is male or female. Type either "M" for male or "F" for female.

Customize your Features
GemStone III allows you to completely customize the appearance of your character. Answer a series of questions about your character's features, including hair color, hairstyle, eye color, and skin complexion.

Create a Name
Next, you will be asked to create a family name for your character. Type in a name and hit RETURN on your keyboard. We suggest that you choose a medieval-fantasy-sounding name.

Since GemStone III is inhabited by thousands of players, there is a possibility that your requested name has been chosen by another. If your name is already taken, the game will ask you to pick another name and offer you a list of suggested names. After you pick a family name, you must pick a first name for your character. This works exactly like picking your first name.

Exit the Character Manager
Before leaving the character manager, you have the option to review your stats (view character), view skills and spells, re-roll your character (retire character/family), and/or enter the game (Play GemStone III).

Once you are satisfied with the character you created, choose 4 to Play GemStone III.

Seek Advice
Since the world of GemStone III is so huge, you will enter the game for the first time through either the town of Wehnimer's Landing or Icemule Trace.

There are numerous ways to get help within the game. To follow an online tutorial of first steps and basic commands, type "ADVICE" repeatedly and do what it says each time.

To view Player guides online, type HELP. This offers you a list of Player Guide Topics, including combat, wealth, creatures, skills, talking, etc. Type HELP <player guide topic> to learn more about each topic.

Beginners should also check out and print the list of Basic Commands. For more advanced information, check out the Players Manual.

Take a Tour
GemStone III offers daily tours of Elanthia where you can ask a host questions about playing the game. This is a great way to meet fellow players and to learn tips and tricks. To view a list of tour times, type "TOUR." If there is a tour in progress, type "TOUR JOIN" to join it. If you are currently on a tour and wish to leave, type "TOUR LEAVE."

Solicit Players' Help
Other players are your best resources for advice on playing the game. To speak with other players, use quotation marks (' or "). For example, to ask where the armory is, type "WHERE IS THE ARMORY?"

Though some players may be too busy to assist you, you are likely to find someone who will be glad to offer you help.
