It is official: Half-Life is the most decorated game of its era. Since Valve and Sierra shipped Half-Life in November 1998, the awards have not stopped rolling in. The count now stands north of 50 Game of the Year honors from magazines, web sites, and critics around the world -- a sweep no shooter had ever pulled off before.

So why all the fuss? Ask anyone who has stepped into Gordon Freeman's orange HEV suit. When a resonance cascade at the Black Mesa Research Facility tears open a portal to the alien borderworld of Xen, you do not watch the disaster unfold in a movie -- you live it, crowbar in hand. Here is what the reviewers keep pointing to:

• Seamless levels. No breaks, no loading screens shoved in your face at every door. Black Mesa feels like one continuous place you fight your way through.
• Scripted sequences. Marines rappel through skylights, scientists get dragged off screaming, and the world reacts around you in real time.
• Storytelling without cutscenes. The camera never leaves your eyes. You are Gordon from the tram ride to the final showdown with the Nihilanth, and the tale is told entirely through what you see and do.

The single-player campaign pits you against headcrabs, houndeyes, vortigaunts, alien grunts, and the HECU Marines sent in to silence every witness. Your arsenal grows from the humble crowbar and Glock to the .357 Magnum, MP5, SPAS-12 shotgun, laser-guided RPG, the Tau and Gluon cannons, and living Snark ammo.

Of course, on the Zone the real action is multiplayer. Deathmatch and team play run hot across classic maps like crossfire (with its callable tactical nuke), boot_camp, snark_pit, stalkyard, gasworks, undertow, and doublecross. Want more?
