The wait is over, Zone deathmatchers. Valve has released the big multiplayer update for Half-Life, version 1.1.0.0, and it is the largest set of improvements to hit Black Mesa since launch day. If you play Half-Life on the Internet Gaming Zone, this is the patch you have been asking for.
The headline feature is Spectator Mode. Now you can drop into a running deathmatch server without picking up a crowbar and just watch the carnage. It is perfect for waiting out a full server, learning the ropes on maps like crossfire and stalkyard, or refereeing a grudge match between friends. Spectators follow the action from the players' own points of view, so you see every crossbow bolt and every satchel charge exactly as it happens.
There is more packed into 1.1.0.0:
- New deathmatch maps add fresh battlegrounds to your rotation -- more corridors, courtyards, and chokepoints to master with the MP5, the Gauss cannon, and a well-timed tripmine.
- Netcode improvements tighten up movement and hit registration. Games feel smoother, and lag-induced misses should be fewer and farther between.
- General stability fixes and tune-ups across the board.
Do not forget that the old favorites are all still here. Pop a Snark into a crowded room, laser-guide an RPG down a hallway, or drop the tactical nuke on crossfire and clear the yard the hard way. And if you have added Team Fortress Classic to your Half-Life, your Scouts, Snipers, and Engineers keep right on capturing the flag.
Important for Zone players: everyone in a game must be running the same version of Half-Life. If your version does not match the server, you will not be able to connect. Before you head into the Zone rooms, make sure you and your opponents are all on 1.1.0.0.
Getting the update is easy. See the Downloads page for the v1.1.0.0 patch, install it, and you are ready to go. Update now, and we will see you in the arena.
Good hunting, and watch your six.
