| A Review of Tactics and Attacks | |
|
Why is this game so hard? It isn't, once you know how to kick the enemy's rear using successful attack methods and tactics.
I have reviewed all the main methods of attack and rated them 4 u.
PREEMPTIVE ATTACKS
Tactic: If the enemy picks you up on their sensors and starts moving towards you, run away. When they reach the location where they lost contact with you, they will stop and see if you are there. If they do not see you, they will give up the chase and will turn back, giving you the perfect opportunity for a preemptive attack from behind. Pros: If you fire at the back of a BattleMech, the chances of its fusion engine being damaged or exploding is greatly increased, and even if this does not happen, they will be damaged, giving you an advantage. Cons: The drawback of using this method of attack is that if the power plant on a 'Mech does explode, no salvage will be recovered, and if your sensors are less advanced than the enemy's, they will know that you are coming up behind them and retaliate before you squeeze a shot off. Rating: 2/5 HEAD, TORSO, ARM, or LEG? HEAD: Tactic: By holding the 8 key when issuing an attack order to a pilot, you cause him to aim at the enemy 'Mech's head. Pros: This is a great tactic to use when you are after salvage, because it costs little to repair the head of a 'Mech and replace the sensors. Cons: Even though it is fast and effective, only pilots with a high gunnery skill level will be able to accurately shoot a 'Mech's head without getting enough hits to damage or destroy the engines and weapons. Rating: 4/5 TORSO: Tactic: By holding the 5, 7, or 9 key when issuing an attack order to a pilot, you cause him to aim at the enemy 'Mech's center, left side of torso, or right side of torso. Cons: It takes longer for the enemy 'Mech to be destroyed by this method than any other. Weapons, sensors, engines, and other body parts are damaged, giving around a 1 in 8 chance that the 'Mech's tattered, mangled body -- which has taken about a minute to finally "disable" -- will not blow up and leave nothing to salvage! Plus, you get the added bonus of your 'Mech's being damaged in the battle (and your pilot's dying of old age!). Rating: 0/5 ARMS: Tactic: By holding the 4 or 6 key when issuing an attack order to a pilot, you cause him to aim at the enemy 'Mech's right or left arm. Pros: Even though this might sound like a stupid idea, it really isn't. By firing at an enemy 'Mech's arms, you can destroy its weapons, making it pretty useless. Cons: Skilled pilots are again needed and some heavier 'Mechs carry weapons on their bodies. Rating: 3/5 LEGS: Tactic: By holding the 1 or 3 key when issuing an attack order to a pilot, you cause him to aim at the enemy 'Mech's right or left leg. Pros: I find nothing more funny than blowing the legs off an enemy 'Mech and watching it try to hobble towards you while you blow it away with missile fire! This is a great tactic for salvaging, because once engaged in combat, the enemy 'Mech will spend most of its time trying to get up off the floor after you've shattered its legs and blown them clean off, so you will hardly ever get any shots on you. Cons: Needs good gunning skill, though, and on occasion results in explosions. Rating: 4/5 DEATH FROM ABOVE: Tactic: If you order one of your jump-capable 'Mechs to jump onto an enemy unit (not a building), the jump cursor will turn to an attack cursor. Pros: This method does result in some moderate damage to the enemy? Cons: But usually causes you more! This is the only hand-to-hand attack your 'Mechs can perform in MechCommander. In MechWarrior 1 and 2 you could kick the tin out of any 'Mech or vehicle you wanted. Death from above is probably one of the most disappointing attack methods. Your 'Mech flies into the air (while being bombarded by enemy fire) and drops above the target with sketchy animation, and usually by the time you have done this, the target has moved and you land on the turf, collapse onto the floor, and get hailed with short-range missiles. Before you know it, your pilot has ejected, leaving you bewildered and wondering, "What the hell just happened?" Rating: -5/5 USING THE SCENERY Tactic: Using natural and artificial structure can greatly increase chances that your attack will be successful. Pros: By burning down trees and forests, you create a blip on enemy sensors that to them looks like a 'Mech, and they will instinctively come and have a look. Now if they are expecting one 'Mech, they will be surprised to find several of your powered-down 'Mechs instead, won't they? Using jump-capable 'Mechs to escape over cliffs or a river is a good idea when being chased by slow, heavy clan 'Mechs, because they will not be able to follow you. Holding the C key and left-clicking on a bridge will tell your pilots to attack it from where they are standing -- good if someone is following you. Traveling through areas with high-rise buildings will force any pursuing enemy to use only weak missiles to get over them. Cons: However, sometimes accidents can, and do, happen: like falling over after jumping across an obstacle so that you get pulverized by pursuers, or accidentally blowing a bridge that you need later, or trapping a non-jump 'Mech on a broken span of bridge. Rating: 3/5 STORE-BOUGHT and CUSTOM 'MECHS When you first start playing, it is best to learn about the characteristics of each 'Mech by playing with the store-bought types so you can get used to them. Then after a while you could remove some weapons that you find ineffective on the battlefield and replace them with superior weapons. I find in both multi-player mode and single-player mode, it is much better and more fun to customize your 'Mechs to incorporate more powerful weapons and you will find that even a light-class commando is able to defeat a cougar with the right configuration of weaponry. Sometimes over-customizing a 'Mech can result in its not taking part in battles as much as it should, because its weapons may lack overall strength and range. Rating: 3/5 MULTIPLAYER The following are a few tips for playing multi-player games:
