Motocross Madness 2

Did you miss the dirt being thrown in our chat rooms? Two game developers came leaping off the online dirt tracks into the Zone Theater Chat room on May 23, 2000. Vice President of Rainbow Studios Scott Novis and Lead Game Designer, Robb Rinard, were online to talk about their latest adventure -- creating the sequel to the award-winning Motocross Madness. Part 2 is PACKED with a whole new set of adventures and challenges sure to get your adrenaline pumping and your pulse racing.

Missed the chat? No worries. Here's an edited excerpt.

+Julia@ZEvents> HOT BREAKING NEWS: Microsoft and Epic Records Group announced yesterday that they have reached an agreement to feature the song "New Skin" by Incubus in "Motocross Madness(TM) 2."

Attitude_XT> When is the approximate date of release, and approximately how much will the game cost without taxes?
+Julia@ZEvents> May 25th, $39.95 :-)

Ex25> Any plans on a follow up game such as Motocross Madness 3?
ScottN@Rainbow> Good question. We tried to set the bar high with MCM2 so that it would have some strong legs. However, we are continually developing our technology. I don't think I can say much more than that.

maximepetit> Did you know when the track editor will be release on [the] Internet? If yes, when?
RobbR@Rainbow> The editor will be available in about 2 weeks. We are testing it all this week.

dustbuster3000> Are there any other dirt bikes in the game other than Honda, KTM, and Yamaha?
RobbR@Rainbow> Those are the only 3 licensed bikes. You can however, paint your own maps and stick them in the game. Spawnholio has made a real nice Suzuki bikemap.

garr_99> How many indoor/outdoor tracks will it have and will it have benches, tables, etc. to get around?
RobbR@Rainbow> There are 16 Supercross tracks and 1 bonus track shipping. You unlock the bonus track by finishing the Pro-Circuit. They contain every kind of obstacle imaginable.

gwenci> Is the multiplayer game 'tag' going to be included in Motocross Madness 2 and will it be improved in any ways?
RobbR@Rainbow> Tag has been improved a number of ways. It is now scored. You can turn on "stunt tag" mode and tag Ball mode where the player who is it carries a ball on his bike. When struck, the ball goes flying and everyone scampers after it.

ScottN@Rainbow> Tag ball rocks.
gwenci> When do you think the demo will be available for download?
RobbR@Rainbow> In a couple of weeks also.

KTF_bumbum> How many music tracks will there be, and who will be the recording artists?
RobbR@Rainbow> There is no in-game music, only Incubus in the opening video. We went without music by design. Our engine sounds are totally ripping. A pack of dirtbikes all around you is a pretty encompassing audio experience. Music on top of that is a bit much. Historically, people use rock'n'roll to bury their terrible engine sound effects.

X_Kobra> Hello Julia, Paw, Robb and Scott! I would like to get a brief explanation on how the ranking system will work and what happens if top spot riders refuse to race people in order to maintain their ranking?
RobbR@Rainbow> The ranking system is based on a version of the Age II ranking system. The scoring does take into account whether the riders you compete against have a higher ranking than you do. So that might make it kind of challenging for users in the Far East to compete against American riders.

WWW_cr250r_1> How many track pieces are there in the editor and what are they?
RobbR@Rainbow> The new editor has nothing to do with the old editor. It is not tile based. It's a real 3D program that uses our game engine. You can test drive your new track right in the editor.

WWW_cr250r_1> When you ride through the trailer park, are there people that chase after you?
RobbR@Rainbow> To answer one question I know is on everyone's mind: Yes. Multiplayer bugs are all fixed and works great over the Internet now with up to 8 players. No, there are no people to chase, just lots of vehicles.

johnny_bravo212> Back to the ranking system. Will riders be ranked by scheduled races? Or by your average on a given track? Or an overall average?
RobbR@Rainbow> I honestly can't answer details about the ranking system. The Zone folks developed the ranking system on their own.

VRT_FireBreath> Will Rainbow Studios be planning on releasing any additional tracks in the future for MCM2?
RobbR@Rainbow> Probably not, unless we do a Special Edition Track Pack like we did for MCM 1.0. We're counting on quality tracks coming out of the Armadillo editor real soon!

The_Thrasher> Greetings Julia, Paw, Robb and Scott! When will Euro trash, like myself be able to get our hands on this? I'm sure [it's] an awesome game.
RobbR@Rainbow> I believe not only YES but in rapid fashion. Soon, like within a couple weeks.

jerryfar> I have MCM2 beta2, which I won. I gotta say that this is by far the best game I've played yet. I have (3) questions: (1) Will those that have beta2 need to go buy the game, or will there be a patch to make it full? (2) Have bugs that made it lock on voodoo cards been fixed, and can you land better? Once again, AWESOME GAME. Everyone will love it!
RobbR@Rainbow> 1) Beta users need an entirely new CD-ROM. 2) MCM2 went through tons of config lab testing on tons of different cards/computers. It works well. 3) I don't see a 3. Thanks a lot.

Emig5m> What are the expectations of MCM2 winning awards such as: "2000 Racing Game of the year award"? I hope it wins: "GAME OF THE YEAR"!! :)
RobbR@Rainbow> Thanks. I just hope it works well for everyone that buys it. The rest is up to you.

HRC_Racer> Robb, so when can we expect to see it in the stores?
RobbR@Rainbow> It is showing up around the USA this week. Rumor has it that some EB stores have it on shelves. [Editor's Note: The game should be in stores as you read this!]

bonesracing> In online play, would a high speed connection (dsl or cable) have an advantage over a 56k modem and will I be less susceptible to lockups in the Zone during game play?
RobbR@Rainbow> No. MCM2 is a peer-to-peer game. Not client/server. So long as your connect is working well at 28.8+ it will work great.

REBEL_Boikee> HI EVERYONE ! Nice too see a lot of Team X here tonight ! Is this MCM2 going to be a lot like MCM1? You know? Skip jump's a lot... And on SX, is that going to be VERY MUCH improved than MCM1? u no ;o) MCM1 SX sucked ! I would like it like NATS almost!
RobbR@Rainbow> Weesa dooze our best to make MCM2 a bester game :)

ZXT_Twink182> Hi, I was wondering if MCM2 will be too much for my PC to run fairly good? I have 8MB video card and a Pentium233. Will it run somewhat smooth or will I have lots of problems? Thanks.
RobbR@Rainbow> The Supercross will work good for you. The rest of the game will be a challenge to say the least.

SMC_CapMcGrath1> Good afternoon, Rob and Scott. How fast of a PC will we need to run the Motocross Madness version 2?
RobbR@Rainbow> I run very smoothly on a Celeron 300 O/C to 466 with a TNT 1.0 card. I also recommend 128MB RAM.

maximepetit> I have a little problem with my beta 2. The morenci mine track freezes every time I go on it and it's like that in stunt, enduro and pro-circuit. I don't know if the other beta 2 are like mine, but if the answer is yes, will you release a patch or something like that?
RobbR@Rainbow> No, we're not into patching software, and of course, we don't patch betas. The problem in beta 2 is fixed in the gold version. We aim in doing it right the first time, and so then, you don't need to patch.

Dr_Snake_> One quick question Robb, it may turn into two... Is there going to be an improved stunt arena?
RobbR@Rainbow> The new stunt mode allows you to pick the Enduro tracks to do stunts which adds a lot of fun. Also, there are 3 indoor tag arenas.

Dr_Snake_> What's all included?
RobbR@Rainbow> There are 10 in all.

Dr_Snake_> Is there going to be a jumping section only? Will there be an area for jumps?
RobbR@Rainbow> Yes. A great big one.

ScottN@Rainbow> You can catch HUGE air in this game.

dustbuster3000> How do things like snow and mud affect the riding in the game?
RobbR@Rainbow> There is no mud in MCM2. And the snow makes it quite a bit more slippery. But the snow is only in 1 level. I prefer racing dirt bikes on dirt.

HRC_DrumGod> How big (# of megs) do you expect user-created national tracks to be? And will we need the CD in the drive to race?
RobbR@Rainbow> The shipping MCM2 nats are all around 6-7MB. If users add a lot of other stuff like sounds, animations, and new 3D objects, the size will increase... MCM2 uses Safe-Disc which requires the disc being in the drive when you play. Enduro files range from 12-16MB each. SX are all around 3-4MB.

TNT_Jammin> Will a host in Zone play be able to control the difficulty level (easy, normal, hard) for all players?
RobbR@Rainbow> Exactly! The coolest new thing in multi is the ability to include AI riders in your race.

TNT_Jammin> Difficulty level per host?
RobbR@Rainbow> yes

X_Ricco> Hello Julia, Paw, Robb and Scott! Can we turn off the eco system (meaning trees, plants, etc.) to get better performance?
RobbR@Rainbow> No, it would open up a cheat if the trees weren't there for some people, so they are always on. But collision with the trees is an option. If you want MCM without trees, play MCM 1.0... :)

Kasnitch> What is the current state of Windows2000 functionality in the soon to be retail version? The beta 2 was limited in D3D support.
RobbR@Rainbow> It's fully functional. Although driver manufacturers may give you some headaches. The game was thoroughly tested with Win2K and we fixed all known issues before shipping.

MXR_Sailan> Hello Robb, Scott, Julia and Paw! Are there any cheats and will people be able to cut the track like they do now?
RobbR@Rainbow> We spent several months of development time writing code to minimize people's ability to cheat/hack/cut, etc. It is our sincere desire that no one set out to hack our game, and we implore everyone to enjoy the game the way it ships.

RST_Xracer> First, thanks for having us, guys. As I understand it, the ranking system goes by race wins. Do lap times figure in at all? Are SX and Nats ranked separately?
RobbR@Rainbow> Sorry, I'm very uninformed on the details of the ranking system. The Zone folks developed it, not Rainbow Studios.

+Julia@ZEvents> Email zmaster@microsoft.com for ranking details/questions. :-)

TOXIC_DcRoCk> Hi I just want to say that MCM2 Is AWESOME!!! I have been beta testing it for over a month now. My question is what kind of program/s did you guys use to design and make the game and will users be able to design and make their own tracks on MCM2 like MCM1? "Tracks" meaning national tracks. GA
RobbR@Rainbow> Thanks a lot! We use 3D studio and Photoshop to design the tracks here because the editor wasn't ready for use yet. The Armadillo editor will be available in a couple weeks for everyone to start using. But if you intend to model your own 3D objects, don't throw away your 3D Studio yet. Armadillo is NOT a 3D modeller, and it not intended to be.

ScottN@Rainbow> Yes thanks.

sunnydog2003> Are the graphics options going to improve? For example, my computer only allows me to use a 640x480 resolution and I have a 32MB AGP 4x Graphics Card. Will there be an option to use 1024x768 instead while in hardware acceleration mode? Is the game optimized for a Pentium III?
RobbR@Rainbow> That was a bug in beta 2. In the final, you can select all your video modes.

Mikeb43> 1) How big (MB) is the Track Editor? 2) Plus I still want to join RBW_ :) Great job, Scott. Good managers always listen.
RobbR@Rainbow> 1) Around 40-50MB. Although we're counting on guys like BAATK and other to make lots of add-on stuff for it. 2) To make it onto team RBW, we have to meet first. :)

UFO_Honus> Hi Robb, content creator question here. You guys have been pretty tight lipped about details on what the track editor will be like. Can you give any details at this time, i.e., how 3D objects and their associated texture maps will be inserted and formats?
RobbR@Rainbow> That's TMI for this format Honus. But there will be both documentation and example content for every aspect of the editor when it's released.

CLB_bullet> If you're in the high bandwidth room, and someone comes in on a 56k connection, will they be able to enter room or a race?
RobbR@Rainbow> Yes, they will be able to enter your race. To a certain extent, we count on people knowing what they're doing (scary I know).

hehe68> I downloaded the final version this morning, and the game freakin' rocks! Great job. I will buy it this Friday to support you. What are your thoughts on people test driving games if they buy them afterwards?
RobbR@Rainbow> What can I say to that? Myself and about 20 others just got through dedicating our very lives to making this game. Our livelihood depends on you buying the game and not ripping us (or anyone else) off.

JR_KOOL> Hello, what are the system min. and suggested requirements for single and multi-player games? And what is the min. number of players to launch a multiplayer game?
RobbR@Rainbow> We recommend about a 400mhz+ in speed. A fast TNT/ATI/Voodo type 3D card and 128mb of RAM. It takes 2 to tango in multiplayer.

Y3K_MaNTiS> Will you guys ever be making an ATV type game? Like w/4 wheels?
RobbR@Rainbow> Sounds like fun, but not this week. The guys here really wanna blow some stuff up :)

VRT_FireBreath> Will the track editor being released allow the user to create all the different types of tracks, or just one type?
RobbR@Rainbow> All the track types can be built by the editor now! Woohoo!

DMG_attack_n> Seems to me that the biggest problem with sites having Nats (/ included) is the massive amount of space needed to store user created tracks. So, my question is: if everyone is going to use the same editor, seems to me that we should be able to all use an un-complied code that people could download and compile. Similar to the way SX tracks are done now. Am I crazy or would this just be too easy ?
RobbR@Rainbow> It would open up the chance to cheat massively, and the new data in its raw format is much larger than the resultant .ENV files that you distribute. Our new track file format is all data encrypted to minimize cheating!

X_LoneWolf> What graphics card works better in MCM2: Voodoo 5500 or Geforce2 gts? Or is there another card that outperforms those two?
RobbR@Rainbow> GeForce 2 is totally awesome! But so is TNT 2, and Geforce.

Ex25> I'm running an AMD K7-700mhz Athlon processor. Will the game run ok on my system (Athlon has been known for some problems)?
RobbR@Rainbow> I just purchased an Athlon 800 over the weekend. Loving life with it and MCM2 :)

SMC_CapMcGrath1> Hello again. I have 4 questions 1) will there be cheats? I hope not. 2) On tag, will the tab cheat be fixed? 3) And I saw a screen shot of a biker on an airplane. What's that about?
RobbR@Rainbow> 1) No. 2) It wasn't broken. 3) You can jump airplanes and helicopters.

ScottN@Rainbow> Yes, thanks to everyone who's come out for this chat!

RobbR@Rainbow> I'll see you all soon in the evening for some serious racing!!!! Thanks for hanging!

Congratulations to the following winners of Motocross Madness 2 during the chat:
