Rise of Nations blends real-time strategy with 4X depth: you advance through eight Ages, push your national Borders outward to claim territory and rare resources, and race to build Wonders while managing four resources and attrition on enemy soil.
Getting Started
Assign Citizens to gather Food, Timber, and Metal, and use the Commerce cap (raised by building Markets and researching Commerce at the Library) to keep Wealth flowing; caravans running between your cities add extra Wealth. Never leave your City idle -- keep pumping Citizens until you hit your economic limits.
Research Ages at the Library to advance from the Ancient Age forward, since each Age unlocks better military, economic, and civic buildings. Also build up your first City into a full economy with Farms, a Woodcutter's Camp, a Mine, a Market, and a Temple before you expand.
Winning Strategies
Expand early by building new Cities on unclaimed land -- each City extends your national Borders, and expanding into rare resources like Wine, Silk, or Fur grants powerful economic bonuses through Merchants. Ring your cities with Towers and Forts, which project territory and let you defend on your own ground.
Build a combined-arms army rather than spamming one unit: use ranged infantry (Slingers, then Bowmen) backed by heavy infantry (Hoplites, Legionaries) to tank hits, add cavalry to run down enemy ranged units and Citizens, and bring siege weapons like Catapults to knock down buildings and Towers.
