So listen up, Rookie: Here are some simple, straightforward flying tips that apply both to the original game and to the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Balance of Power campaigns. Once you've fine-tuned your skills, fire up the add-on pack and strap yourself into a B-Wing, because it's time to take on the Empire!
TURN, TURN, TURN
Cut your power to one-third when you need to turn sharply.
A number of melees can involve head-on passes with guns blazing. Try quick, sharp turns, shoot, and turn again.
FIRING AND AVOIDING MISSILES
If a missile is on your tail, try the following:
Pull back on the throttle to one-third, then make a quick left roll, followed by a dive for about a second or so, and then a sharp right roll; then pull into a quick climb. This set of maneuvers will go a long way toward breaking the missile lock.
Missiles do the most damage when striking the rear of a ship.
Do not fire missiles when in a twisting, turning dogfight less than 1.5 kilometers in range. The larger turning radius of the missile will cause it to go wide. Only use missiles in this situation if you want to try and confuse your opponent to provide yourself with a better opening.
If an opponent fires a missile at you from long range, try going to full speed. When the missile is about one to two kilometers away, go into a sharp turn and keep turning. The missile will eventually explode harmlessly.
If there is more than one enemy, try launching all your missiles at just one of the targets. After the first target is destroyed, the missiles automatically target the next ship.
If your craft lacks countermeasures for missile attack, press the "L" to get a lock on the missile, go to one-third throttle for the fastest turn rate, and begin blazing with your lasers. Missiles are actually rather easy to destroy if you shoot at them fast enough.
If the missile is in front of you and you don't want to shoot it for some reason, throw all your energy from your weapons and shields into your engines and keep the missile in view at all times. It will eventually explode.
ATTACKING BIG SHIPS
Try looking for blind spots on the capital ships. The Corvette has a blind spot directly astern. Just come up behind the ship, avoiding the engine exhausts, and start shooting.
When launching torpedoes at capital ships, vary your attack angle while keeping your lock on target. An enemy burst at your straight set of torpedoes can destroy them all too easily. Shoot in different directions so the torpedoes come from different angles and are harder to hit. Time-delay between launches to help distance the torpedoes from each other even more.
When attacking an Imperial Star Destroyer, try going into the open area directly below the bridge and get very close to the hull. Enemy ships will accidentally shoot the Star Destroyer instead of you.
MELEES
If in a TIE fighter, be careful about attacking ships that can fire backwards, as you are unshielded.
Try this in multiplayer when some of your friends are in the area: Once an enemy is on your tail, call another player for help and then fly directly towards them. When you get real close to the friendly ship, dart down to avoid them and let the enemy taste your friend's lasers.
If you have a TIE Fighter on your tail and its hull has been damaged, try dropping a flare. Since a flare fires backwards, there is a chance that it can strike the TIE Fighter and destroy it, which is a pretty nifty little trick.
When fighting TIE Fighters, link your weapons for heavier damage. A couple shots, and they're history.
When fighting in an asteroid field, try hugging one of the larger asteroids. The artificial intelligence will reduce speed and turn the craft chasing you, and possibly crash it into the asteroids.
Sometimes in one-on-one melees, cut your engines, max out the energy to your shields and lasers, put your shield to double-front and wait for your target to approach. Wait as they close, wasting their laser energy on your healthy shield. Shoot any missiles that come your way. Chances are the opponent hasn't boosted shields at all. Try quad-linking your lasers and get two to three good solid hits on them before they turn away.
STAYING AWARE
Careful mapping of your buttons on your joystick can save your life in battle. Set up a button for dumping energy from your weapons into your shields. Hitting SHIFT+F10 is a difficult trick to do in battle. Also, try mapping your inflight map to another button. Staying aware of everyone's location is critical.
ONLINE PILOT SUPRESSION
There are two normal fight outcomes in online play with X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. First, in head-to-head passes, the one who fires most accurately and quickly wins. Second, the one who breaks away usually dies first, as the suppressor will cut to one-third throttle and line up another shot where the breakaway ship will pass. The best way to avoid this is through constant suppression fire, breaking the enemy's will to attack. Jog your ship out of the line of fire and return to fire again. Keep doing this and the enemy player will have to cede at some point, giving you the upper hand.
