How Do I Host or Join a Retail Game?

Hosting a Retail Game
Make sure you have the retail CD-ROM in your drive, but do not launch it; if the game auto-starts when you place it in the drive, exit out of the screen.

Hosting a Retail Game in Either Table View or List View

There are two ways for you to host a retail game. You can click Quick Host from the game room toolbar and the Zone will find the first free table and make you the host of a new game. Or you can click the Host button.

When you click the Host button, you will get a Game Settings dialog box for setting up your game. With default settings, the name of the game is "My Game," the number of players is the maximum count supported by the game, and the game is open to all. You can use the box to change the name of your game, decrease the number of players who can join, and make the game private by clicking the "Private game" check box and then entering a password. (If your game is private, make sure you've given the password to the people you want to participate.) And if you want to disable quick joiners, click Quick Join to find the first available game, then click Block Quick Joiners .

Once the game's parameters are set, click OK , and you will see the game's launchpad, which contains a list of current players on the left, and a Chat Display and Text Entry area on the right. You can chat with the other players to determine any specific rules you plan on using in your game.

When you're hosting a retail game, you'll find a Settings button on the launchpad, which joiners can't see. Use this button to bring up the Game Settings dialog box to post your preferred settings and the settings agreed by joiners. When the game setting have been entered, joiners will see them posted above the chat window.

Here's how:
  1. Click Settings on the launchpad.
  2. Type your game setting preference in the "Game Description."
  3. Click OK .
  4. Your game setting message will appear on the launchpad for all joiners to read.
  5. If you want to change your message, click Settings again and repeat steps 2 and 3.
Launching a Game : Once you and the other players are ready, click the Launch button to start, or click Leave to exit the game room.

Note : Sometimes it takes players a minute or two to connect to a game, due to latency, so be patient when others are joining your game. Also, certain retail games will make a Network button available to you after you launch. Do not select this button after having launched a game from the Zone or the game will drop all players.

Joining a Retail Game
Make sure that the game is installed on your system. (Certain games also require you have their CD-ROM in your drive.) Note: Do not launch the game before you start. If the game auto-starts when you place it in the drive, exit out. The game will launch on your machine as soon as the host starts it.
