Descend sixteen dungeon levels beneath Tristram Cathedral to slay Diablo, balancing melee, ranged, and spell attacks while managing life, mana, and gold across an unforgiving single-character dungeon crawl.
Getting Started
Pick a class that fits your playstyle: the Warrior has the most Vitality and can repair his own gear, the Rogue excels with bows, and the Sorcerer starts knowing Firebolt and has the deepest mana pool. Distribute your level-up stat points toward your class's key attribute, since Warriors need Strength, Rogues need Dexterity, and Sorcerers need Magic.
Keep a stack of healing and mana potions on your belt (press 1 through 8 to quaff them instantly) and return to Tristram often to sell loot and repair equipment. Talk to Griswold the blacksmith, Adria the witch, and Pepin the healer, and take the Cathedral quests they and the townsfolk offer.
Winning Strategies
Read every spell book you can afford to raise its spell level, because higher spell levels increase damage and reduce mana cost. Fireball and Chain Lightning clear packed rooms, while Town Portal scrolls and the Town Portal spell let you escape a bad fight and restock instantly.
Fight in doorways and corridors so enemies attack one at a time instead of surrounding you, and lure ranged foes like Succubi around corners. Watch for immunities on the deeper Hell levels, since some demons resist fire or lightning and force you to switch damage types.
