Macro is the art of spending money as fast as you make it. Micro is the art of making every unit earn its keep in a fight. Win both and you rule the Koprulu sector; neglect either and the Zone ladder will teach you humility. Here is how the sharpshooters keep the two in balance.
Keep Those Workers Busy
Your economy lives and dies on saturation. A mineral line runs best at roughly two workers per patch, with three harvesters on each vespene geyser. Do not stop making SCVs, Probes, or Drones too early - a steady stream of workers out-mines the player who keeps saying "just one more unit" until he is broke. Once a base is saturated, send the extras out to expand. He who holds more patches usually wins the long game on wide, expansion-heavy maps like Lost Temple.
Never Sit On Money
Floating thousands of unspent minerals is the surest sign of a beaten player. Watch these macro habits:
- Terran and Protoss: add production - Barracks, Factories, Gateways - until your income can feed all of it at once.
- Zerg: larvae cap at three per hatchery, so build extra hatcheries and keep those larvae hatching. Idle larvae are wasted minerals waiting to happen.
- Do not over-queue. A stuffed production queue is money frozen in place instead of out fighting.
Micro: The Stutter-Step
In a firefight, standing still gets you killed. The stutter-step keeps your units shooting while they reposition:
- Give the attack command and let the unit fire its shot.
- The instant the shot lands, move a step back or to the side.
- Attack again, and repeat the dance.
Marines backpedaling from Zerglings, Mutalisks harassing and pulling off before the Scourge arrive, Vultures kiting a slower army - all of it buys free damage. Just as important, spread out against splash. Siege Tanks, Lurkers, Reavers, and Firebats all punish a clumped-up ball, so keep your formation loose when you close in.
Drill both hands until macro runs on pure instinct and your fingers are free for micro. Do that, and whether you play stock StarCraft or Brood War on Hunters, Big Game Hunters, or Blood Bath, you will be a force to reckon with on the Zone. Good luck, Commander.
